Getting Outside has everything to do with herbs!

Jul 30, 2024

As an herbalist, I'm deeply passionate about my connection to plants. I engage with them through studying, growing my own herbs, and spending time in nature. It's truly fulfilling to witness plants thrive in their natural habitat. However, with much of our plant knowledge being acquired through online or in-person courses, many of us don't get enough exposure to the outdoors. This holds especially true for those with clinical practices, where outdoor therapeutic activities are often overlooked. It seems only natural that immersing ourselves in nature is vital for connecting with plants, but its benefits extend far beyond that.

Spending time outdoors offers a myriad of advantages, from reducing stress to enhancing immunity. One aspect that is often overlooked is the profound impact that nature has on the mind, and how it can transform our overall perspective on life. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, being in nature acts as a soothing agent for our overactive minds, improving working memory, cognitive flexibility, and attentional control. Humans have evolved in wild environments and depended on nature for survival, instilling in us an innate desire to connect with the natural world. Time spent in nature triggers a physiological response that reduces stress and replenishes cognitive resources, restoring our ability to concentrate and focus.

It's evident that spending time outside is crucial for our health and overall well-being. Many contemporary wellness practices are conducted indoors, particularly due to the recent COVID-related restrictions. However, reconnecting with nature in outdoor green spaces has become more essential than ever. This realization was one of the inspirations behind the creation of Herbs, Qigong & Hula.
